How to Pick a Shingle Color You’ll Still Love in 15 Years

Most people spend weeks choosing a paint color they can redo next spring for a few hundred dollars, and about ten minutes choosing the roof color they will live with for two decades. Seen from the street, the roof is roughly 40 percent of your home's visible exterior. It deserves the weeks.

Start with what is not changing

Your brick, stone and any siding you do not plan to repaint are the fixed notes the roof has to harmonize with. A few pairings that consistently work along the Gulf Coast:

• Red or orange-toned brick: dark brown, weathered wood blends, or a deep charcoal. Avoid gray-heavy blends that fight the warmth.
• Tan, cream or beige: almost anything works; brown blends feel warm and traditional, charcoal reads crisp and current.
• Gray or white siding: charcoal, slate and black are the classic moves; a brown roof next to cool gray walls tends to clash.
• Colorful siding (coastal blues, greens), keep the roof quiet: charcoal, dark gray or black lets the walls be the personality.

Light or dark on the Gulf Coast?

You will read online that dark roofs are wrong for the South because they run hotter. There is truth in the physics, but with today's shingles and, far more importantly, proper attic ventilation, the real-world difference on your power bill is much smaller than the internet suggests. • Dark roofs hide algae streaks and stains better, and make a low-slung ranch feel grounded.
• Light and mid-tone blends show streaking sooner (choose algae-resistant shingles) but keep a big roof from dominating a small house.
• Blends beat flat colors on almost every home, the mixed granule tones hide wear, repairs and imperfections a single-tone roof shows off.

Never pick from a two-inch swatch
